Latest after 'two & half years' about Me,My Life,My Gadgets,Ubuntu & Windows 7
Well, It's been what 'two & half years' Since I posted something on my blog & it's been busy 'two & half years' of my life.
In these 'two & half years' I :
- Completed my MBA.
- Got to know what it feels like when you get your first job & that too in a Fortune 500 MNC & how you can 'easily' fed up with Corporate culture & corporate Greed of driving an organization towards more and more profits even though the Organization that I am working in, has 10 Billion US$ In CASH on it's balance sheet, even in these pressing times but then again this is how they Built that Cash :-)
- Got My first Car - But I did not like this petrol car (Zen Estilo VXI) from day one mainly because of it's looks (Yes it was a bad decision on my part to buy Estilo VXI I could have been better off buying Swift VDI Black then) & as I drive my car for good 1400+ Km's a month {Traveling Back And forth from my home town Sunam to Mohali (where I am working) on weekends & Occasionally driving to Shimla(Hill resort near Mohali) once in a month or two} so I am now telling my Dad to have a diesel car & benefits of having one ;-) I am Confused between Swift VDI Black , Hyundai i20 Diesel as far as a hatchback cars are concerned & in Sedan I am Confused between Honda City AT & Fiat Linea Emotion Diesel. Now talking about Swift it's one of the best hatchback car that you can buy today but it is an outdated car & as I will be driving my new car for at least 4 or 5 years I don't want to take any chances but to me Swift VDI is value for money car as it gives you all in 5 lacs & then talking about Hyundai i20 Diesel, which Hyundai will be launching by the end of this year & will be based on already popular i20 patrol although there will be a big difference in price for sure but i20 will have more features like ABS,Alloy wheels,Steering Audio Controls,Beige finish amongst others & i20 Diesel will also have more powerful & refined engine as compared to Swift VDI.So will be able to decide only after seeing i20 that Hyundai will launch & it also depends on what will be the price as price should not overrun features it offers for that price. Now Talking about Sedan cars (Which I think I will end up buying) Honda City is more costlier then Fiat Linea (Which comes in Diesel variant too but that is not the case with Honda City AT - although on carazoo.com it's posted that Honda will launch City's Diesel variant, but the issue is 'when', as I can not wait till 'eternity') & it does not offer all the features that Linea offers & that to at a great price & Linea is bigger & good looking then City AT but there are two issues with Linea, Which I think could be a deciding factor, one Engine is terribly underpowered in Linea (for a car which is 300 to 400 KG's more then Swift it's still using same 1.2 Engine that Swift uses) but there are some credible news that Fiat will shortly offer a 1.6 engine option as well, then I think it will be a great buy BUT WAIT second big issue with Linea is Fiat's after sales service, the tie up 'thing' that they have with TATA is not working as I've heard that it's a nightmare to have your car serviced in one of these Fiat/TATA Service centers & I don't want to be a 'duck' with a 'non-working/under performing' but 'good looking' car ;-) hence Will decide in next 4 or 5 months (Once Hyundai & Fiat Launch these 'updated' cars as this time around, I don't want to take any chances) & will be posting some Nice pics on my Blog & on my site as well.
- Got my first domain www.gurpreetjoshi.com (Had it in My Mind but did not feel the push for it before & I've not updated the site yet, will update it as soon as I find some time as I don't want to Use Templates, will be using my own index pages & I want to try my hands on asp,Wordpress & it's plugins as well with it to give it that web 2.0's look & feel so it will take some time.Earlier site that I had was on a shared server with nasty address, but it was good, I learnt some Java Stuff creating that, you can (try to) find that site at http://ludhiana.sancharnet.in/gpjoshi1/)
- Sadly Scummed to Materialistic/Necessity Greed which follows once you get your first job & once you relocate yourself to another City like getting all the things which you have been thinking about for a while but could not buy because you were preoccupied with something else, like I have purchased lot of gadgets in last Two & Half Years like Ipod Touch,HTC Touch,Sony Vaio CR & PSP amongst others I spent lot of money on these gadgets & being a gadget freak I can not resist the temptation of getting my hands on the gadget I like but now I think with time I know that this should not be the case I should be bit more selective in gadgets I buy & I should resist the temptation of buying Useless items/things/gadgets & wasting money on it.I will continue to buy those things which I like & which are value for money.
- Installed & Using Ubuntu & Win 7 on my computer & trying other Operating systems in VMWare/Visualization software's.
- Others Firsts as well which I don't think that I should
writetype here {as these are personal to me & I don't Like sharing personal matters with anyone apart from that individual (if it's an Individual) with which it's shared} - more on that later some other time.
Now things which I want to do & I have been thinking about for some time now.
- Since I got my job I've been Thinking about doing what I wanted to do in my life as this Work that I am doing now is not bad at all it pays you well & that is the reason why I will continue to do justice to it till I am doing it but it takes its toll on your personal/intellectual growth & your personal/intellectual growth leaves a lot to be desired so after some time I will take 'some time off the Job' that I am doing to think about my personal/intellectual/mental growth which I have always held up against other things (materialistic or non-materialistic) & will work towards the goal that I have cherished for so long & have worked for better half of my life & I know that you can be a successful individual only if you have the dream & the will power & perseverance to remain on path & as they say 'Aim Something those who Aim & nothing is sure to hit it'.Having said that I am also a practical person I always like to have a backup plan because you never know, so it is good to have an backup plan before you delve into something, it is true even when we are talking about someone's career & life as life is what ? A combination of small little moments & steps one at a time & if you slip there should be something to grab to keep you on track. As far as my life is concerned I just want to have a simple life where there is SOMETHING TO DO where You can be a part of social change rather then simply driving an organization towards more & more profits without doing something meaningful in your life You can grow/earn & can feel contented if the job that you are doing is paying you well but you can never be satisfied with it if it is not the thing which you wanted in life.It can also work as a catalyst or that 'internal motivational force' & it can make you think about the other side of your life & it can drive you towards your goal & it can be that 'internal motivational driving force' which you needed to work for that extra bit & I know very well that It's someone's serious & sincere effort which helps him in succeeding & as I am an eternal optimist I believe that honest sincere
hardSmart work always pays.
- I have been thinking about doing CCNA & then CCNP/CCIE eventually (There is one big thing which I discussed earlier that I will try & do before doing CCNA/CCNP/CCIE so CCNA/CCNP/CCIE is on hold for the time being as you should set your priorities straight - it helps)
- I also want to do Ph.D in management,it takes 3 years & lot of hard work to do a Ph.D that is why I decided that I will do it later on but definitely before I try & go abroad - Read following lines on that.
- I am also thinking about leaving this country for Canada as I have my relatives living there & getting Visa should not be an Issue especially under new rapid 'Visa Processing' legislation promulgated in Canadian Parliament recently so it is lot more easier to get a Canadian Visa now a days but there are above mentioned things which I want to do in my life before trying to leave India for good.I love India no doubt about it but I do not like the way it is being Run by the Indian Govt.Democracy Is a good thing to have but there should be some sound logic for steps that these politicians take, took & taking - Will talk about Anarchy & Socialism with capitalistic fundamentals ala China later some other time :-)
And Now let me write Type something about Ubuntu & Win 7 that I've been using for some days now.As I Discussed earlier about Ubuntu in another post that how stable this Operating system is, & now with latest Ubuntu 9.04 it's bit more easier to switch from Windows & it's ecosystem as Ubuntu has all the tools & Features that You will need if you are a normal home user.I Downloaded & Installed Ubuntu after trying the latest version of it using live DVD & I liked it over the current version of Ubuntu then I created Two different partitions one for Linux Swap & one for Linux (Ext3 or EXT4 among other options it is up to you I guess & I must Confess that I am not a Linux guy but EXT3 & / worked for me) & then defined that EXT3 as / drive for Linux, you can also use Console/Terminal as well to do that but the partitioning software included with Ubuntu setup is good enough for that hence there is no need to be adventures about it!!! just create swap partition which should be two times the size of RAM that you have in your rig that is it then install Ubuntu on Ext partition & it will take some time once installation starts. It took 40 mins to install on my Intel core2due laptop then once it is done You will be amazed with the fact that you don't need any driver what so ever !!! Yes No NEED TO INSTALL any driver at least that was the case with me I did not need any driver disc what so ever.Ubuntu detected all the devices & it installed all drivers for that I was online once installation was done.It was reading USB cards, Webcam was working along with everything else, I was really surprised as I have used Ubuntu earlier as well but it was not as easy to install as the latest version of Ubuntu Is I am lovin Ubuntu more then ever.
Another Operating system that I want to Discuss Is Win 7 which is kind of a Vista Second Edition as the core of the OS is the same but there is no WinFS(Windows File System) again it's still having that same NTFS File system which is about 15 years old filesystem, although it was a marked improvement over FAT filesystem due to how it creates & uses Indexes to save files. There are some improvements in Win 7 over Vista.I downloaded & installed Win 7 RC1 & it took just 25 mins to install which is good as compared to Ubuntu but the main issue is with the driver support, it did not detect my onboard NIC card but fortunately it did detect the Wireless card so I could go online to search for right Lan Driver which was a nightmare as Sony does not support Upgrading OS (Yes that is true, they want you to use same OS for 5 years at least) I had really hard time finding right Lan Driver I had to dig deep for that in fact I got the feeling once that I am digging dark web for it which no search engine indexes :-) then after finding & installing Lan Driver & using it for some time I can say that it is a good update over Vista as the nagging UAC prompts are few and far between & it has more Eye candy features like changing Wallpapers with just one click on desktop & has more set of themes as compared to Vista etc on eye candy level but on system level it has same set of features, apart from simply fine tuning some of the features M$ Introduced for the First time in Vista. But the bottom line is that, if you have Vista already Installed & you have paid for it then there is nothing which I can think off which can justify another Rs 15000 /- for
Enough Blah-Blah for today.
BFN(Bye For Now)
